Life Of The Spirit

The Fountain Of Living Water...

There is a fountain of "Living Water" that Jesus talked about in John 7:37-39. You know the saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink", the same is true of authentic Spirit-led Christianity. I can tell you about Jesus & Holy Spirit, I can tell you about eternal life, I can tell you about salvation that encompasses healing for body, soul, and spirit. And in turn some can tell me this is a fairytale. But I know what drinking from that fountain does. Telling me that it isn't so, is like that horse thinking that somehow by telling me the water doesn’t exist, that "it’s a fairytale", will somehow change my mind about my experience. That is the vain imagination, that is the fairytale. The only one hurt by not drinking this amazing offer of Living Water (Holy Spirit) is the one who rejects it, not the one who already experiences the benefits.

Luke 11:9-13 Tells us that Holy Spirit Himself is THE Gift (the "Living Water") that we can ask the Father for. 1 Tim 4:14 also talks about not neglecting THE Gift that is within, that was given through the laying on of hands (the gift is Holy Spirit). 2 Tim 1:6-7 also says to stir up THE gift of God which is in you that was given through laying on of hands, again this is referring to Holy Spirit. It can be assumed then, that if you have The Gift, you have access to all that He brings and distributes as He wills (the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23) and the spiritual gifts (Rom. 12:6-8, 1 Cor. 12 ). Our part, is not to quench, or stifle Holy Spirit (1 Thess. 5:19), or grieve Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:30), and to eagerly desire the gifts - especially the gift of prophecy, because prophecy edifies the church (1 Cor. 14:1).

We don't necessarily receive and function in the gifts on the basis of asking for them (or trying to buy/earn them), but through relationship with Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit won't "work" without relationship, no matter how much we might ask for the gifts. The biggest hindrances to the functioning of the gifts of Holy Spirit is lack of relationship with Him, lack of surrender, lack of our availability, ignorance/lack of understanding in the Church, a religious spirit, idolatry, and agreements with a spirit of witchcraft (wielding control and manipulation over people or elements for one's own benefit using the human spirit or unclean spirits in rebellion to God's authority).

In Acts 8:12-24 in regard to Simon the sorcerer trying to buy the power - the new believers who were water baptized (along with Simon) had not yet received the Holy Spirit. Paul and John were laying hands on the new believers to receive the Holy Spirit (remembering that He Himself is THE Gift of God). Simon tried to buy the free gift of Holy Spirit and the authority to impart the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands. We receive the Holy Spirit through a baptism of the Holy Spirit - which is a separate thing from water baptism. Belief in the Lord Jesus Christ is the pre-requisite to receiving the Holy Spirit (Note: We are to pursue Love first - not a definition of it we made up - but Love Himself - again the emphasis is on pursuing authentic relationship with Him (God is Love), which sets us up for healthy relationship with each other. As we behold Him in relationship we are increasingly transformed into His likeness). The baptism of the Holy Spirit can happen through the laying on of hands, and by asking God, or spontaneously by the Spirit (as in Cornelius' household in Acts 10), and after or before water baptism (Acts 10). Receiving Holy Spirit is not automatic, as is assumed in some Christian traditions. It is a unique experience from water baptism or conversion. This is why many churches do not have the gifts of the Holy Spirit operating, because they didn't yet receive, or failed to stir up THE Gift of God, that is Holy Spirit. Once we have Holy Spirit living in us, we are not to quench or grieve Him, and we are to eagerly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that we may prophesy (1 Cor. 14:1).

Why would Jesus refer to Holy Spirit or life of the Spirit as Living Water? Water is linked to life, but why differentiate further by calling it "Living" water? Because there is such a thing as dead water. This is water that is devoid of oxygen. caused by the overgrowth of algae that consume oxygen. The overgrowth of algae is caused by human pollution. Recovery of these dead water zones is possible, but not due to adding more water, but rather by reducing human pollution. The parallel here is that when we stop polluting the spiritual environment with manmade ideas - even good ones - if they're not "God ideas" born out of relationship with Him (via Holy Spirit) the water might look similar, but won't produce the life we seek. This is essentially the difference between strictly religious Christianity and Christianity based on a healthy personal relationship with God by Holy Spirit. As we walk in life by the Spirit we should be experiencing growth and life in increasing measure. There is no promise as to how long this can take, but the key factor is growth - living water causes fish and vegetation and animals to inhabit an area - and the more living water - the more growth. The more Holy Spirit in our lives (ask, seek, knock, fellowship, hear, obey, reap), the more love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness and self control we will have as we walk with Him, even as we walk through the challenges of seasons of life or circumstances (Psalm 34:19).
